Couples Counseling For Michiganders

Fine-tuning: for couples who want to move the needle from good to even better.

If this whole relationship thing has been a little more confusing and harder than you thought, taking a proactive edit to your love story may be the next smart move for your love life. Couples therapy is an excellent option for those interested in taking the bull by the horns by strengthening and fine-tuning a good thing. And it solidly rests on science-backed approaches including the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).

In the safety of our time together, we’ll gently explore your relationship, take a look at how you engage in this love story, and learn ways to love each other that lead to safety in your relationship and a deeper emotional connection. This experience may not only be the next right thing for your relationship but can result in additional benefits for your health and personal well-being. And if you're a parent, science suggests offspring greatly benefit from a vibrant relationship between the two of you. It is a win-win all the way around.

The Gottman Method for Couples and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) are considered by many marriage therapists to be the gold standard for marriage counseling. I have advanced training in both and currently seek supervision and ongoing training in EFT.

Gottman and Emotionally Focused Trained Therapist

Standing alongside the Gottman Method for Couples is Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Based on science, EFT takes into consideration the highly regarded theory of attachment and leads partners on a journey of learning about the importance of being securely attached and how to create a secure attachment with the one they love most. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) absolutely has a rightful place in couples therapy. Its tool-based approach can be useful when partners would benefit from learning skills to better regulate emotion, especially when interacting with their partner. In marriage therapy, CBT stands nicely on the shoulders of the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy which do the brunt of the work.

Although marriage counseling has traditionally taken place on pleather couches, recent studies suggest that therapy done via Zoom in most cases is just as effective. Before we begin, our Zoom-based marriage counseling we’ll walk through the practical aspects of telehealth (e.g. privacy concerns and a solid internet connection) to ensure we’re set up for success.

Online marriage counseling is not a forever commitment. If at any time you are not benefitting from teletherapy, we will work together to find a solution.
