Depression Therapy with Michigan Psychotherapist Marla Field

Marla’s Approach To Depression Counseling

Whether your depression had a sudden onset or it has been part of your story for some time, depression is very treatable.  As we partner together, I’ll invite you to share with me what depression is like for you and what areas of your life it has impacted.  Together we’ll explore your story, gain insights, and try on new ways of engaging with yourself and the world around you with the goal of removing depression from the driver’s seat.

What is clinical depression?

Common symptoms of depression include depressed mood, markedly diminished interest in activities, significant change in weight, impaired sleep, lethargy, difficulty concentrating, and indecisiveness. feelings of worthlessness or unexplained guilt, and possibly recurrent thoughts of death.

Behavioral activation therapy is one tool that falls under the umbrella of CBT but also reflects a concept found in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) which is another science-backed approach. The idea is to choose action in spite of a difficult physical sensation, emotion, or thought versus being held hostage by it. In other words, it’s about responding in a way that reflects what you value instead of reacting out of emotion. Clients who have worked to build their respond versus react muscle report a decrease in feeling powerless and major gains in confidence.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Depression

CBT is considered an evidence-based treatment for depression and can be highly effective.

However, for many, CBT alone only scratches the surface of what leads to depression to begin with. Because every client I meet has a unique story, we will work together to figure out the best combination of therapeutic approaches for you. And while CBT will be one of them, it will be one of many solid interventions to help you find relief.
